Inheritance scams are a type of fraud in which a scammer contacts an individual and pretends to be a legitimate representative of some deceased person's estate.

  • Project Type : Business Strategy
  • Project Process : Completed Project

The scammer will often claim that the individual is due to inherit a large sum of money or some other valuable asset, but in order to receive the inheritance, the individual needs to first pay a fee for legal fees, taxes, or any other type of administrative costs. Once the individual pays the fee, the scammer disappears and the inheritance never materializes.

Inheritance scams can be emotionally devastating as they prey on an individual’s wish to believe that they have inherited a windfall or other valuable item of inheritance. They often take advantage of vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or those who have recently lost a loved one. These scams are often hard to detect as the scammer will often provide documents and other evidence to make the situation seem legitimate, when in reality there is no inheritance at all.
